Yeah, I think the idea of having my own blog came to my mind when I was ten years old. Back then, blogs weren’t popular – They were just something you could see in some teenie blockbusters, but I was always caught by the idea of having my own space on the internet. And I loved reading and writing. That’s how I stumbled upon bookstagram! For those of you who don’t know what I’m talking about – Bookstagram is a community on Instagram where you create an account to share your latest readings, review books and generally chat about everything bookish. Some of the people also had their own book blogs, and this was the point when nobody could’ve stopped me anymore from creating my own blog.
Back then, in 2014, I was totally happy with a free domain ( btw a domain is the internet address, like www.fabiaailina.com – in other words, it’s like the house where your blog is living!) What a free domain is? It’s an address you don’t have to pay for! But then it looks for example like this: fabiaailina.wordpress.com . Ugly, isn’t it? But for the beginning, it’s of course totally okay to have such a blog! Because of this, I got the chance to try out if I’m really into blogging or if it was just a phase. To be honest, it saved me a lot of money back then because… let’s say, I was a very inconsistent blogger : D I remember myself creating a new blog like a hundred times till I finally created this baby last summer!
DO YOU ALSO WOULD LIKE TO CREATE YOUR OWN BLOG?
In this post, I want to teach you two things: 1. How to host your own blog & 2. How to choose the perfect theme! Are you onboard? Then grab the obligatory cup of coffee & let’s begin!
This post contains affiliate links! Not sure what this means! Click here!
1. // HOW TO HOST YOUR BLOG
I can already hear your thoughts – What the hell does that means? To host your blog means to buy the domain you would like to set your blog up to! I use a german hosting company called IONOS ( which I can just recommend!), but if you’re living in another country, here are some of the most popular hosting platforms:
And don’t worry, hosting your own blog isn’t as expensive as you may think! I pay like thirty bucks per year, and for me, that’s an acceptable investing.
BUT, before hosting your domain, make sure you know how you would like to name our blog! Changing the name of your domain is not possible, and having a matching blog name to your domain is more reliable for your readers, so choose wisely. If you create a blog in which you are the center of the topics, for example a lifestyle blog, I can just recommend taking your own name. Having a creative title is cool, but after a while you’ll get tired of it, just saying : D
Okay, now that you bought your own domain, you’ll have to choose a website builder. Most bloggers and companies use WordPress, and I also can recommend it! It’s so easy to work with & you have a wide range of freedom and possibilities. I tried out Blogger some years ago, and nope, it’s just not my case.
Okay, now you’ve set up your own domain and installed WordPress, right? The next step would be to choose your WordPress theme, so let’s continue down below!
2. // HOW TO FIND THE PERFECT THEME
I get a lot of questions about my blog theme, so yeah, in a few seconds I’m going to reveal the mystery guys : D
Your blog theme is like your identity on the internet. It creates a certain atmosphere & when you use this power well, you can attract some regular readers!
So before choosing a blog theme, ask yourself:
- Who am I?
- What do I like to represent?
- How does my style look like? Is it feminine, cool, playful or elegant?
And yes, there are free themes on the internet, and for the beginning, it’s okay to use them, but for the really fancy ones you, of course, have to pay. And no, they don’t cost a fortune! I got mine for 25 bucks and am totally happy with it!
But please don’t buy anything without checking the description! There are some things a good blog theme should have, for example, responsiveness ( so it looks beautiful on smartphones & desktops) and high browser compatibility. Down below you’ll find a list with beautiful & affordable WordPress themes I just adore:
If the themes above are not fitting your aesthetic, just go look on your own – there are a million themes waiting to be discovered! In my opinion, the best platforms to look at are etsy and creativemarket!
I really hope this little guide was helpful!
